How to use active recall while studying
A practical way to check what you remember after reading a lesson.
Try retrieving an answer before checking it
Read a small section of your course material. Then close it and write down the main idea in your own words. Check your answer against the source. If you missed a step or confused two terms, correct your notes and try again later.
Turn headings into questions
For each heading, write a question that the section answers. For example, after reading about binary place values, ask: “What value does each position represent?” Answer without looking, then verify your answer.
Include worked problems
For a mathematical or technical topic, solve a fresh problem without following the example line by line. Check the result and identify the first step where you went wrong. Revisit that step before attempting another problem.
